At the DIC EXPO exhibition in 2025, the global first 23.8-inch ultra-high contrast IPS display produced by HKC Huike was crowded with people. This product, which achieves a contrast ratio of 2400:1 through the traditional friction alignment process, completely broke the industry barrier of "high contrast = high cost", becoming a vivid illustration of the continuous breakthroughs in IPS TFT display technology. From technological innovations in the laboratory to their infiltration into daily life scenarios, IPS TFT displays are reshaping the boundaries of visual experience in all dimensions.
IPS (In-Plane Switching) is the advanced form of TFT (Thin Film Transistor) liquid crystal display technology. Its core innovation lies in the horizontal arrangement of liquid crystal molecules. Unlike the three-dimensional electrode structure of traditional TN technology, IPS technology places both electrodes on the same plane, allowing the molecules to remain horizontal when subjected to force. This characteristic not only gives it the "hard screen" physical advantage but also fundamentally solves the problem of image distortion. The direct benefit brought by this structural innovation is a 178-degree ultra-wide viewing angle. No matter from which direction you view, the color distortion rate is as low as undetectable to the naked eye, which is the key reason why IPS screens are preferred in public scenarios such as Beijing Metro Line 5.
Color reproduction accuracy is another core competitiveness of IPS technology. With excellent color reversal and brightness conversion performance, IPS screens can achieve a color fidelity effect close to professional level. Its 95%+ DCI-P3 color gamut coverage enables it to be the first choice for graphic design, medical imaging, and other professional fields. In medical imaging diagnosis, the precise dark field detail performance of IPS screens can help doctors capture lesion information, while in the aerospace field, its stable image quality presentation can ensure the accuracy of data monitoring.
Technological iteration has never stopped. Early IPS technology was limited in dynamic display scenarios due to insufficient response speed, but now through material innovation and algorithm optimization, it has achieved a qualitative leap. The 24.5-inch IPS display produced by HKC Huike adopts a a-Si ultra-high frequency driving technology, not only achieving an 800Hz physical refresh rate, but also compressing the response speed to 0.5ms GTG, combined with 1152-zone MiniLED backlighting, completely breaking the color constraints of TN panels in the e-sports field. To address power consumption pain points, the industry has developed a 27-inch 20Hz ultra-low power consumption product, which improves the resolution by 4 times while supporting power bank direct supply, suitable for mobile scenarios such as camping.
In terms of scene application, IPS TFT technology is deeply extending from consumer electronics to multiple fields. In the consumer sector, the 85-inch 360Hz ultra-large IPS display achieves a dynamic clarity leap under 4K resolution through the HSR rapid engine, becoming a new choice for home audio-visual and e-sports; in the industrial field, its stable image quality supports the 24-hour precise operation of monitoring systems; in the vehicle scene, the 178-degree viewing angle ensures that drivers can clearly read navigation data at any position. What is more noteworthy is the breakthrough in the professional display field. The 5K ultra-clear resolution IPS artistic display with 218PPI pixel density and 99% DCI-P3 color gamut minimizes the color error between design works and the final product.
Although OLED technology holds an advantage in flexible display fields, IPS TFT still maintains competitiveness in the mainstream market due to its battery life advantages and cost control capabilities. Data shows that the pixel opening rate of IPS screens using bipolar drive technology has increased by 25%, and compared to VA soft screens, the power consumption has significantly decreased. The theoretical service life can reach over 70,000 hours. With the integration and application of technologies such as MiniLED backlighting and self-insert black algorithm, IPS screens have been continuously catching up in core parameters such as contrast and peak brightness. The RGB MiniLED IPS TV launched in 2025 has achieved a full-screen brightness of 600 nits and a contrast ratio of 8000:1, with a significant improvement in dynamic range.
From the first introduction of this technology by Hitachi in 2001 to becoming a pillar of the global display market today, the development trajectory of IPS TFT displays has verified the core value of technological innovation. Driven by new technologies such as AI image quality engine and ultra-low power architecture, this display technology, which combines color accuracy, viewing angle and cost advantages, is moving from professional fields to mass consumption, extending from fixed scenarios to mobile terminals, providing better solutions for the visual needs of various industries. In the future, with the deep integration of display and Internet of Things, artificial intelligence technologies, IPS TFT may shine with greater value in fields such as smart cabins, medical imaging, and metaverse terminals.
