Latest company news about Under the impact of OLED, how can LCD display screens seize the mid-to-low-end market through cost advantages?

With the rapid development of display technology nowadays, OLED displays have quickly gained a firm foothold in the high-end market due to their advantages such as high contrast, fast response, light weight, and flexibility. This has posed a strong challenge to traditional LCD displays. However, LCD displays are not without countermeasures either. Their cost advantage still has potential to be exploited in the mid-to-low-end market.
I. Analysis of the Cost Advantage of LCD Displays
(1) Mature technologies reduce research and development costs
LCD technology has undergone years of development and has reached a highly mature stage. A large number of problems during the research and development phase have already been overcome, and there is no need to continuously invest huge amounts of research and development funds to explore new materials and processes as is the case with OLED technology. Take the backlight module as an example, the CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp tube) and LED (light-emitting diode) backlight technologies of LCD are already quite stable. Manufacturers can carry out production based on mature technical solutions, reducing the cost of research and trial errors. In contrast, problems such as the lifespan of organic materials and blue light attenuation in OLED still require continuous investment in research and development efforts to solve, which raises the overall cost.
(2) Stabilizing the supply chain and leveraging scale effects
The LCD display screen has a well-established and stable supply chain system. From glass substrates, liquid crystal materials, to polarizing films, driving ICs and other key components, there are numerous suppliers available worldwide, with stable supply and sufficient price competition. The large-scale production demand has prompted suppliers at all stages to expand their production capacity, resulting in significant scale effects. For instance, large LCD panel manufacturers such as BOE and Hua Xing Optoelectronics have achieved large-scale production by building high-generation production lines, which has reduced unit production costs and made LCD panel prices more competitive.
II. Expanding the mid-to-low-end market through cost advantages strategy
(1) Customizing products for specific fields
In the mid-to-low-end market, the demand for display screens varies across different segments. In the mid-to-low-end smartphone market, consumers prioritize cost-effectiveness. LCD screen phones can attract consumers with their cost advantages, offering large-capacity batteries and high-capacity memory at lower prices. In the educational tablet sector, considering the long usage time, the feature of LCD screens without flicker and better eye protection, combined with cost advantages, can provide high-cost-performance solutions for educational institutions and students. Manufacturers can tailor differentiated LCD display products to meet these segmented demands and precisely expand the market.
(2) Collaborate with brands to enhance market recognition
LCD display manufacturers can actively establish in-depth partnerships with mid-to-low-end brands. They can jointly develop new products, ensuring that the display effect meets the basic needs of the market. By leveraging the cost advantages of LCDs, they can lower the overall product price. Through the market channels and marketing capabilities of the brand owners, they can increase the market exposure and recognition of products equipped with LCD displays. For example, a domestic mid-to-low-end mobile phone brand collaborated with an LCD panel manufacturer to launch a series of affordable phones. By taking advantage of the cost advantages of LCD screens and the brand's own marketing efforts, it achieved good sales results in domestic and emerging markets such as Southeast Asia.
(3) Optimize costs and enhance product competitiveness
On one hand, we continuously optimize the production process to enhance efficiency and reduce the defect rate. For instance, by adopting more advanced automated production equipment and minimizing human intervention, we can not only increase production speed but also reduce the occurrence of defective products due to human factors, thereby lowering production costs. On the other hand, we negotiate with suppliers to establish long-term and stable cooperation agreements, striving for more favorable raw material purchase prices, and controlling costs from the source. At the same time, while ensuring product quality, we reasonably simplify non-core aspects such as product packaging, further reducing costs and making the final products more attractive in terms of price.
Although OLED has a strong impact, LCD displays, thanks to their cost advantage, can still secure a position in the mid-to-low-end market through precise market positioning, in-depth brand cooperation, and continuous cost optimization. They can even expand their market share and continue to write their own story in the market landscape of display technologies.
